  When I decided to purchase an engagement ring, I initially started my search at the "top named" stores. I could barely stand being in there and conversing with the used car salesman-like employees while gathering data points on price and narrowing down styles of settings. Then I went to all of the top rated smaller local jewlers and what a difference! Something about the wonderful employee Julie at Provident Jewelry as well as a particular setting they had just felt right. There was no pressure and she was extremely helpful in finding the perfect diamond (of course I tried to find one in the online stores in parallel thinking it would be cheaper and more variety). I told her my criteria for the diamond and when it showed up I realized I had been outdone and it was perfect. If you're in the market for a ring, I recommend you start your search at the "top named" stores and end your search at Provident Jewelry with Julie just so you can have the appreciation for the experience.
